In Ohio, Toxic Wastewater Is Bubbling Up Out of the Ground
Wednesday, July 29, 2026
Ohio receives large volumes of wastewater from natural gas drilling operations that is injected deep underground for disposal. In Marietta, residents and city officials have reported wastewater surfacing in yards, basements, and streets. The state's Ohio Department of Natural Resources regulates injection wells where this wastewater is stored. City officials have filed complaints with state regulators about the issue.
