Gold Flows to Hong Kong Hit Decade-High Before Clearing Launch
Wednesday, July 29, 2026
Hong Kong imported 68.6 tons of gold in June 2026, the highest monthly volume since November 2014, according to data from the Census and Statistics Department. The increase was driven by preparations for Hong Kong's newly operational gold clearing system and demand from mainland China. The clearing system, which launched in June, allows direct settlement of gold trades in Hong Kong dollars, reducing costs for traders who previously relied on offshore clearing mechanisms.
