Tankers Divert to Egypt as Houthi Threat Upends Red Sea Trade

Tuesday, July 28, 2026

Empty supertankers are redirecting to Egypt's Sidi Kerir port on the Mediterranean to load Saudi crude oil as shipping traffic at Saudi Arabia's Red Sea export terminal has decreased following Houthi militant threats. The Houthis have conducted attacks on vessels in the Red Sea since 2024. Tanker operators are routing shipments through the longer Mediterranean route to avoid the Red Sea passage.
