5th Circuit blocks Texas law requiring websites to filter "harmful" speech

A federal appeals court blocked a Texas law requiring websites to filter content deemed harmful to minors, ruling the requirement violated Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. The 5th Circuit Court of Appeals found that while age verification measures were permissible, the filtering mandate conflicted with federal law that shields online platforms from liability for user-generated content. The court did not rule on whether the state could enforce the age verification portions of the law separately.
