'George Washington was not the first president.' What?!

John Hanson served as President of the Continental Congress from 1781 to 1782. The Continental Congress was the legislative body that governed the thirteen states before the ratification of the Constitution. George Washington was elected the first President of the United States under the Constitution in 1789 and served two terms. The titles and governing structures were distinct: the Continental Congress presidency was a legislative role, while the Constitutional presidency was an executive office.
