Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" was filmed on 65mm stock in the 1960s, a format compatible with Imax 70mm projection. As of 2026, fewer than 100 theaters worldwide operate Imax 70mm screens capable of displaying the film in its original large-format specification. Most Imax venues use digital projection or smaller-format Imax systems instead.
