Team uses AlphaFold AI to redesign gene-editing proteins to make them safer

Friday, July 24, 2026

Researchers used Google's AlphaFold AI system to identify which regions of gene-editing proteins cause errors during editing operations. The study focused on understanding structural features that contribute to off-target cuts, where the proteins bind to and modify unintended DNA sequences. By mapping these error-prone regions, the researchers designed modified versions of the proteins intended to reduce such mistakes. The work was conducted at a research institution using AlphaFold's protein structure prediction capabilities.
